When Worry Becomes Overwhelming

Anxiety has often been referred to as one of the common colds in therapy as it is one of the most consistent issues that people seek counseling for — and for good reason. But unlike a common cold, it doesn’t always go away on its own with a little rest and hydration. It can impact your ability to focus, sleep, feel present and in the moment, or make decisions.

At times, it may seem like your mind is stuck in overdrive while your body is stuck in stress mode. You may find yourself overthinking conversations, imagining worst-case scenarios, or feeling a constant sense of tension or dread that just won’t quite go away.

Anxiety can be exhausting.

It affects how you show up at work, in your relationships, and even in the quiet moments when you’re trying to rest or simply be alone with your thoughts. But you don’t have to keep pushing through these difficult moments on your own. At Better Days Counseling & Wellbeing, we can help you.

Common Signs of Anxiety

Anxiety can look and feel different for everyone.

It might be something you’ve always lived with, or something that’s shown up in response to a big change or challenging life circumstance.

Here are some ways it might be showing up in your life:

  • Racing thoughts or constant worry
  • Difficulty sleeping or relaxing
  • Feeling easily overwhelmed, irritable, or restless
  • A tendency to avoid certain people, places, or situations
  • Trouble focusing or feeling “foggy”
  • A sense of dread or unease that’s hard to put your finger on
  • Physical symptoms can include muscle tension, headaches, or stomach issues

Whether your anxiety is low-grade but constant, or it comes in intense waves like panic attacks, it can be disruptive — and it’s not your fault. Anxiety is often an unconsciously learned survival strategy; your brain and body are just trying to keep you safe. Therapy can help you develop the tools to respond differently, with greater understanding, skill, and compassion.

Feeling Unsure about Therapy?

It’s completely normal to have some hesitation.

You might be wondering:

  • “Is my anxiety even ‘bad enough’ to require therapy?”
  • “Will I have to talk about painful things I’d rather avoid?”
  • “What if I don’t know what to say or where to start?”
  • “What if it doesn’t help?”

These are all valid concerns. Starting therapy can feel vulnerable, especially when anxiety already makes you feel exposed or self-critical. Even knowing what to say when you make that first call to a counselor asking about services can seem to make the anxiety can run wild.

Here’s the truth: therapy is a space where you don’t have to have it all figured out. You can come exactly as you are — unsure, overwhelmed, or even skeptical — and you and your counselor will take it one step at a time.

Together, you’ll create a space where you can slow down, breathe, and explore what’s really going on beneath the surface, without judgment or pressure.

How Anxiety Counseling Works

At Better Days Counseling & Wellbeing, our approach to treating anxiety is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based practices.

We’ll begin by understanding how anxiety uniquely shows up for you — in your thoughts, in your body, and in your everyday life. From there, we’ll tailor a path forward that supports your personal goals and values.

We may draw from:

  • Neuroscience: To help you understand the nuts and bolts of what is going on in your brain and physiological makeup that causes anxiety to rise or fall.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): To help you get unhooked from anxious thoughts and reconnect with what truly matters to you.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): To explore patterns of thinking and behavior that keep anxiety going — and practice new, empowering responses to bring relief.
  • Somatic techniques: To tune into the body’s signals and calm the nervous system, especially if you feel stuck in “fight, flight, or freeze”.
  • Psychodynamic exploration: To gently uncover deeper emotional patterns or early experiences that may be influencing your anxiety today.

We’ll work together to build self-awareness, resilience, and emotional flexibility. Over time, you’ll feel more capable of meeting life’s challenges — not by avoiding anxiety, but by responding to it with greater confidence, understanding, and a sense of agency.
